Born in Israel, Hedva Ser is a contemporary French artist known for her sculptures, tapestries, watercolours, and jewellery.
Having received an initial training in the youth department of the Tel Aviv Museum of Art, in 1966 she enrolled in the Académie de Peinture et de Sculpture at the Grande Chaumière in Paris, and then in the Centre d’Art Technique Camondo, before finishing her studies at Hornsey College of Art in London. After painting, she took on tapestry-making and developed a new relief technique.
Making the acquaintance of Alicia Penalba in 1975 (Argentinean sculptor and creator of non-figurative works who participated in the revival of sculpture that began in the 1950s), was decisive: she devoted herself entirely to this style from 1982.
Drawing inspiration from the many facets of nature, by turns powerful and overwhelming, or tender and poetic, Hedva Ser sought in abstract art an experience of the sublime: a state in which opposites merge, such as the finite and the infinite, the conscious and the unconscious, order and chaos.
After realising set decorations for the broadcast of Jacques Chancel’s Grand Échiquier in 1984, she exhibited throughout the world and committed her efforts to creating peace through her art. She created the Tree of Peace, which soon became a new emblem with universal scope, having been installed in different places throughout the world (including: the esplanade of the Hebrew University of Jerusalem in 2007; Still University in Mesa, Arizona in 2011; Temple University in Philadelphia in 2012; Al-Quds University in Jerusalem in 2013; in Andorra; Harvard University in Cambridge, Massachusetts; and in the Verdala Palace gardens in Malta in 2014), and earning her UNESCO’s nomination for Artist for Peace in 2012.
Hedva Ser’s creations are the complex expressions of a tear: the extreme fragility of equilibriums yet simultaneously, of a powerful, restorative and beneficial energy.
In 1989, Hedva Ser became Chevalier des Arts et Lettres, Chevalier de la Légion d'Honneur in 2001 and UNESCO Artist for Peace in 2012.
