In 1993, the year of his death, Russian landscape painter Nikolaï Timkov saw a retrospective of his oeuvre that revealed his sincere and delicate style, earning him the name ‘Dean of Impressionism’.
Born in the steppes of temperate southern Russia in 1912, Timkov studied at the Rostov Art College from 1927 to 1930 before joining the Academy of Arts in Moscow thanks to Isaac Brodsky, renowned academician and painter, who encouraged him to embrace late 19th- and early 20th-century Russian artistic traditions. Upon graduating in 1939, he left to carry out his military service in the navy until 1946.
Deeply fond of the central and western Russian countryside which he travelled assiduously, Nikolaï Timkov created a unique pictorial style in his representation of landscapes. His original compositions featured countless vivid details — specific and symbolic — all rendered with a unique handling of the palette and characteristic brushwork.
His works can be found in major Russian public collections such as the State Museum of History in Saint Petersburg, the Museum of Fine Arts in Rostov-on-Don, and the Novgorod State Museum of History, Architecture, and Art.read more >>
