Georges-Van Zevenberghen

Georges Van Zevenberghen (1877-1968)

Biography

Born on November 30, 1877 in Moleenbeek-Saint-Jean, Georges Antoine Van Zevenberghen studied at the Académie in Moleenbeek until 1896, then at the Académie des Beaux-Arts in Brussels until 1899. In Brussels, he was the student of the Belgian painter and printmaker Jan Stobbaerts (1838-1914), his country’s pioneer of realism.
In 1903 he left Belgium for Paris, where he was influenced by the work of French painter Jean Siméon Chardin known for his still life and genre paintings. He moved back to Belgium, but would return to France regularly.
Georges Antoine Van Zevenberghen’s artistic practice belonged to both the realms of Realism and Impressionism. He painted animals and mythological scenes in particular, which were met with great success during his lifetime.
The artist belonged to the Labeur group, which organised an annual exhibition of the work of Belgian artists, and to the artistic circle Pour l’art which aimed to exhibit in salons and other conventions. He was also associated with Luminism, a movement inspired by Impressionism and characterised by the usage of sunny colours.
In 1919 he became friends with the Belgian sculptor Guillaume Charlier. One year before Charlier’s death, in 1924, he painted a portrait of his friend (Guillaume Charlier, lisant) depicted in the sculptor’s house in Saint-Josse-ten-Noode, which later became a museum.
In 1933 the artist became a professor at the Académie Royale des Beaux-Arts in Brussels, a post which he held until 1948.
He died in 1968 in Saint-Josse-ten-Noode.
