Alfredo Hlito (1923-1993)
Alfredo Hlito (Buenos Aires, May 4, 1923 – March 28, 1993) was an Argentinian painter born to Syrian immigrants. He studied at the Escuela Nacional de Bellas Artes in Buenos Aires. Predominantly influenced by Joaquín Torres García, Hlito was one of the initiators, in the early 1940s, of a movement in rupture with traditional art, rejecting the figurative to exalt geometry and abstraction.
In 1945, he became a founding member of the Asociación Arte Concreto-Invención and signed the Manifiesto Invencionista in 1946, participating in exhibitions in Paris with other members.
He collaborated with Tomás Maldonado in founding the Nueva Visión review. In 1954, he received the Acquisition Prize at the Second Biennale in San Pablo and the following year, he participated in the XXVIII Biennale in Venice. He moved to Mexico in 1964 where he lived until 1973. After his return in 1984, he became an active member of the Academia Nacional de Bellas Artes.
Among the main group exhibitions in which he participated is, notably: Vanguardias de la década de los 40 in Buenos Aires in 1980, which combined Arte Concreto-Invención, Arte Madí, and Perceptism at the Museo Sívori.
On two occasions he received the Konex Prize in the ‘non-figurative painting’ category (1982 and 1992).
