Intermediaries are a dime a dozen in the art world and they usually impose hefty commissions on private sales and auctions.

In auction sales, the buyer pays the auction house a commission of somewhere between 12% and 30%, which is added to the hammer price. The seller also incurs a number of additional expenses, such as shipping, storage, insurance, reproduction and sometimes restoration costs. The vendor’s commission is added to the above costs and will be deducted from the adjudication price on a sliding scale, according to the lot's value and the country where the auction house is registered.
